About Monmelta

Monmelta is a reference site about working with solid wood furniture: stripping old finishes, refinishing worn surfaces, repairing loose joints, and repurposing pieces that no longer suit the room they are in. The focus is narrow on purpose. Solid hardwood and softwood furniture can be restored many times over its life, and most of the knowledge needed to do it is procedural — the right order, the right grit, the right clamping.

What this site is

Each guide follows one task from start to finish and writes down the details that are easy to get wrong. The material is drawn from established woodworking and conservation practice rather than personal opinion, and references to publicly available sources are listed at the end of every article so readers can check the underlying guidance.

Where it is based

The site is written from Ontario, Canada, and the guidance reflects local conditions where relevant — in particular the wide indoor humidity swings between damp summers and dry, heated winters, which affect how solid wood moves and how finishes behave over the year.

What this site is not

This is a reference resource, not a workshop or a retailer. Nothing is sold here, and no product is endorsed. For valuable antiques or structurally damaged pieces, a qualified furniture restorer or conservator is the right step.
